Description
Trillium and ants have a symbiotic relationship with each other called myrmecochory, where plants provide food, and ants move seeds. Trillium seeds are distributed by ants away from the parent plant and into underground ant colonies where they eat a fleshy white appendage attached to the seed called an elaiosome. These ant colonies are ideal sites for germination as they are nutrient rich, and provide a safe place for the seed away from rodents and birds.
