The Floods & the Fringes combines a worldbuilding scrapbook with a two-channel video installation, exploring Jeremy Kamal’s speculative universe Mojo, a future where Black cultural practice, technology, and nature co-evolve into speculative ecosystems. Mojo: The Floods depicts a trap producer controlling a watershed through his mixing board, where music sustains ecological cycles of a vast flood plain. Mojo: Stained is set in a fictional tea garden where gangs use colored flora to mark territory and sound to harvest medicinal herbs. The film depicts a dream sequence of a young tea master named Demetrius reliving the memory of being reprimanded by his elder for his fascination with a blue herb; in defiance of the red gang to which he belongs. Jeremy Kamal is a Caribbean-American multidisciplinary artist working across 3D animation, video games, and sound. Drawing on his background in landscape architecture, he creates immersive digital worlds that examine how culture, technology, and ecology shapes one another. His ongoing worldbuilding project Mojo imagines a speculative future in which sound systems evolve into sentient landscapes. Centering Black values, rituals, and practices, the project treats culture not as something separate from the environment, but as an ecological force capable of producing its own forms of landscape. Through Mojo, Kamal explores how alternative cultural practices might offer new ways of thinking about technology, nature, and the construction landscape.
