Butchertown Homecoming New art exhibition with paintings by Gary Slaughter Many years ago, while still in art school, Gary Slaughter had a realization that would shape the rest of his creative life: if he took a job in art, art would become the job, and he'd spend his days painting someone else's ideas instead of his own. So he did the opposite. He worked a regular job so that art could stay exactly what he loved it to be: a space for experimentation, curiosity, and fun, free from anyone else's deadlines or expectations. He likes to introduce himself as Louisville's most UNcredible artist, cheerfully pointing out that he has no previous shows, exhibitions, or awards to his name. It's a title he wears with a wink, and one that belies the depth of skill and observation packed into his work. More than 25 years ago, what Slaughter describes as Divine Intervention led him to a small studio tucked into Butchertown, where he lived and painted for over a decade. It was there, while working on a pig painting he titled The Beauty IN THE Beast, that something shifted in him: he stopped eating meat. He suspects it wasn't entirely coincidence that Armour and Fisher, two working meatpacking plants, were operating in the neighborhood at the time. Between the paint on his brush and the smoke on the air, Butchertown had a way of asking questions a person couldn't ignore, and Slaughter's answer was to become a vegetarian. That same instinct for looking closely at the ordinary (which are often animals -- maybe you saw Gary's fish paintings hanging at MIF in a recent group show) and finding something tender, strange, or sacred inside it still runs through his work today.
